statement

In my current body of work, contactless, I prompt strangers to write a letter to someone they no longer have contact with. I merge various histories and timelines by weaving the handwritten letters into a quilt. The process of interacting with strangers to prompt these handwritten letters facilitates an environment for collective healing. contactless began as a site-specific project of interacting with strangers at the beach. My work has evolved to include my artist cohort, where I have left sheets of paper and a note with instructions to write a letter and drop it off at a mailbox I have installed in my studio. My goals for contactless are expanding into the digital world as well. I have created a website tinyurl.com/contactlesschicago where anyone around the world can submit a letter to the digital quilt. Hearing and reading the stories of contributors to contactless has shifted my perspective on life, and reflecting on what truly matters- human connection and relationships. I have heard from nurses recounting stories of people’s final moments which are often full of regret because of losing contact with people or holding onto words left unsaid. contactless aims to facilitate an outlet for these messages to be released into the world.

"contactless" will be showcased in "letters sent, unsent, and received" gallery at Esquina Chicago (2024 upcoming) and B.A. Manifest Exhibition at Hokin Gallery, Chicago, IL (2025 upcoming).
